LAWN
BOWLS
Story
by Maureen Fox, TransWeb Volunteer Correspondent Competition
began today at the 11th World Transplant Games. The sky was clear blue,
with gentle winds blowing as Lawn Bowls got underway at the Rosehill Bowling
Club. The field is dominated by Australians, but also includes competitors
from Canada, Great Britan, Ireland, Italy, Luxenburg, Mexico, New Zealand,
the Republic of South Africa, and Switzerland. |

I admit at the onset that Lawn Bowls is not a game with
which I was familiar, so I found it most intriguing. First there is the
proper dress which consists of white or cream colored pants for the men,
a white skirt (usually quite long) or pants for the women, and for most
a white top. I understand that the dress code for women has just recently
changed in Australia, and now each club's colors can be worn in addition
to the traditional white. There were exceptions today too, as the Italians
wore their blue warm-up pants, and a few other teams followed suit with
their warm-up attire. Most individuals also wore large brimmed hats. |
|
As with most sports, different clothing styles
only serve to accentuate the difference in delivery style. The most marked
difference was between the Italians and Irish versus the remainder of the
field. The Italians and Irish had a set position from which they threw
their balls, while everyone else took a one step approach. I was most impressed
with the skill level shown today, and applaud all the competitors as well
as the officials of the event. |
