Testing
Kidney donors get tested, too
Kidney donors go through an evaluation too, to make sure they are healthy, they have two healthy kidneys, that they can safely donate, and that they can have a healthy life after donation.
Patients
Once a suitable living donor has been identified, your transplant can be scheduled for a time that’s convenient for both of you. Donation surgery takes about two and a half hours, and the donor can usually go back to school or work six to eight weeks after the transplant.

But if no one you know can give you a kidney, then your name can be added to the waiting list for a kidney from someone who has died.
